Seinfeld referred to his as Golden Boy, the softest, most comfortable t-shirt he owned that had the privilege of always being the first one worn out of the laundry. We all have our “golden boy,” that shirt that is the smoothest touch to our skin and worn constantly. That prized quality for consumers to look for in their fabric purchases (i.e. – shirts, towels, linens, etc.) is referred to as fabric hand, or “textile hand,” by industry experts.

In 2007, at the Baltic Polymer Symposium held in Lithuania, members of the Lithuanian Textile Institute presented their findings about the effects of bamboo fiber usage on fabric hand in a paper titled “Influence of Bamboo Fiber on Fabric Hand.” (For those of you who don’t have this event on your calendar, it is an annual conference held for professors, scientists and chemists around the world giving them an opportunity to gather and discuss the latest findings in the textile industry).

The researchers from the Lithuanian Textile Institute surmised that because bamboo fabric has the characteristics of a soft feel, air permeability and antibacterial and hygroscopic properties, the presence of bamboo fiber in textile materials made of mixed fibres would positively improve the fabric hand of the material.

Experiments were carried out for two groups of cotton, bamboo and cotton/bamboo blended fabrics-raw and treated (scoured, dyed, and dried). One group was treated with industrial softeners and then squeezed and dried. In the other group, fabrics of the same material were soaked in pure water in the same conditions and then squeezed and dried. Fabric hand was determined by using the KTU-Griff-Tester fitted to a universal tensile testing device. (This testing device looks at the behavior of fabric when it is extracted through a rounded hole and the waving process of the disc-shaped specimen is evaluated based on the law of the sine curve.)

The tests determined that bamboo fiber in fabric composition enhanced the fabric hand. In comparing the bamboo/cotton blend and the pure cotton blend (both of the same density and area density) that were soaked in pure water, they show that the blending in of the bamboo fiber significantly improves fabric hand. Additionally, the use of softeners was shown to have a more effective increase in fabric hand when used on the bamboo blended materials. This finding is in keeping with the knowledge we have of bamboo’s superior absorption property.

Put in simpler terms, the use of bamboo fiber in cotton fabrics makes the fabrics much softer and also improves their hygienic properties. So when you are on the hunt for the fabric you’ll want to snuggle in the most, keep an eye out for bamboo and bamboo-blended products.
